Carbotech Fosroc produces a range of waterproofing solutions including injection systems, admixtures, grouts and pipeline coatings as well as tools and equipment. Its injection systems are based on component polyurethane resins, organo-mineral resins, acrylates and micro cements. The company has a history of successful application in mining and tunnelling even in the presence of highly pressurised water. Some of the most important applications apply to anchoring, sealing, cavity filling, rock stabilisation, and crack injection. Another bestseller is Aquaprene C, a hydroexpansive elastomeric seal for tunnel segments, suitable for precast concrete, cast iron and steel tunnel segments as well as prefabricated structures, shafts and tanks. It can resist pressures of over 30bar, has high durability and has the flexibility to accommodate alignment tolerances between segments.

The studded structure of the Delta PT Membrane for negative side water management is designed to equalise damp pressure and divert, control and drain water via a continuous void it creates. The membranes can also divert aggressive groundwater to the station culvert. The membrane is fixed back to the substrate with sealed fixing plugs spaced at 250mm horizontal and vertical centres. Delta’s system incorporates a mesh, welded to the internal face of the membrane, that supports an anhydrous calcium sulphate plaster. The Delta-PT can also be used in a double shotcrete layer. It conducts water away between the inner and outer lining, and serves as the base for the reinforced inner lining. The system does not merely serve to dam, divert or hide the problem; it provides long-term control and protection of internal finishes.

Over the last three years Elkem has developed the Multi-Grout complete rock injection system for tunnels and storage caverns. The system combines water blocker, timer, penetrator, cement and dispersant offering a reduction in groundwater in-leakage, control of settlement, reduction or elimination of waterproof membranes and contaminated water disposal. The system was developed in answer to issues such as pre-grouting, post-grouting, large volume and/or high-pressure inflows, shallow overburden weakness zones and sensitive environmental constraints. The Multi-Grout system has been adopted by the Norwegian Public Road Administration and has been successfully applied in several tunnel contracts contracts including Storhaug and Romeriksporten..

Naue Fasertechnik has been manufacturing geomembranes for major civil engineering projects since 1968. Today, it produces a range of geosynthetic materials for different tunnelling applications. One of the company’s solutions for substrates subjected to high hydraulic pressures as well as areas of seepage is to use a Carbofol polyolefin geomembrane, with a Secutex non-woven geotextile to protect from rough surfaces such as shotcrete. Geosynthetic drainage systems such as Secudrain can also be used to transport and discharge groundwater or seepage. The chemically and UV-resistant Carbofol geomembrane provides a complete seal against the most aggressive mountain water, providing long-term groundwater and seepage protection. Carbofol’s white glazed surface immediately reveals any accidental damage so repairs can be quickly undertaken. Welding of seams and repairs is carried out with state-of-the-art welding equipment by certified installers.

Since 1968, Phoenix has developed compression profile seals for TBM driven tunnels, fitted with prefabricated steel or concrete segments. Phoenix has developed more than 40 different profile shapes and established eight different cross-sections, allowing applications from supply and disposal tunnels to large railway and road tunnels. A recent development is the anchored seal, which is secured directly into the concrete segment. With no gluing or gaskets, this saves cost, cuts environmental pollution, and saves time in the segment factory for correction of imperfections and cleaning.

The Rascor Group covers the whole field of preventative and remedial waterproofing. The company offers a range of services, including design, studies for analysis, preparation and assessment of tender documents, performance of waterproofing works and acceptance of defects correction/handover at the end of a defects liability period. Rascor’s newest introduction is its White Tank water impermeable concrete, part of the RASCOtec preventative waterproofing system. Tried and tested on the Zurich Airport scheme, White Tank provides a waterproof barrier, the joints being sealed by specially incorporated units, without the need for bituminous membranes. Rascor has recently developed RASCOflex, an acrylic grout with a viscosity comparable to water, allowing the finest cracks to be grouted. It is solvent free, and is fire resistant and non-flammable. Controlled swelling with 10-15% increase in volume occurs upon contact with water, causing negligible pressure build-up. A waterproof barrier is achieved through the swelling action; it also has a high compatibility with metal and plastics and is frost resistant.

Sarnafil Group

Sarnafil has provided waterproofing solutions for more than 100 excavated and open-cut tunnels. Its systems range from single-ply membranes for simple structures to sophisticated test and injection systems for the most demanding projects. The simple, loose-laid, single-ply system can be extended to a compartment system by using waterstops or fully adhered membrane strips to create cells, limiting leakage in case of damage. Each cell is fitted with an injection nozzle to enable repair work, restoring water-tightness in any damaged cell. More complex systems provided by Sarnafil include the double-ply test and injection system. A membrane with a nubbed backside forms a cavity that can be vacuum tested for tightness during construction. Once the membrane is covered, cell repair can be carried out by injection. Sarnafil also provides leakage run-off systems, accessories, application devices and a broad spectrum of service programmes.

Xypex Singapore

Xypex concrete waterproofing products are added to the mix during batching. They react with water and the by-products of cement hydration to form insoluble quartz-like crystals in concrete capillary tracts, resulting in permanent in-depth penetration and protection of the structure. Xypex Admix C-2000 NF for new tunnel constructions consists of Portland cement and active chemicals. Contact with moisture generates a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillaries of the concrete to seal and prevent penetration of water and other liquids from any direction. Advantages of the Xypex Admix include resistance to extreme hydrostatic pressure and to aggressive chemicals, cost savings and flexibility in construction scheduling. Other products from Xypex include Xypex Concentrate, a cementitious slurry coating, for protection of construction joints and use on renovation projects. Xypex products have been used worldwide for more than 30 years, more recently on the Mass Transit Railway (North East line), Singapore.
