The 725 and 730 are the first models of a new range of Caterpillar articulated trucks.

A comprehensive development programme has produced significant benefits including: electronic engines, electronically controlled transmission for smoother shifting and better matching of work speeds to haul conditions, and a redesigned front frame with a wider, stiffer box section to reduce stresses. A new front suspension system gives an excellent ride in all conditions and a centre-mounted cab provides improved comfort. All round visibility is enhanced by increased glass and a steeply sloped engine hood.

Technology to enable single-flight belt conveyors to turn corners easily and economically has been pioneered by Continental Conveyor & Equipment Company.

The Continental Tripper Booster effectively reduces or equalises belt tensions at critical points along the belt path. This, combined with the company’s predictive computer-based modelling technologies, Statix and Dynamix, allows the development of complex conveyor paths with multiple or small radius curves and unlimited flight lengths.

DBT Mineral Processing

DBT Mineral Processing is known across the tunnelling sector both for its standard primary crushers and chain conveyors in different performance classes and customised solutions for high performance applications.

For economical, ecological and safety reasons, crusher-belt combinations are increasingly being used to transport tunnel excavated materials. In tunnelling the specialised DBT MinPro crusher technology shows its advantages. The horizontal material flow in the crusher guarantees a high throughput, while the compact design – even in the highly mobile types – allows it to be moved straight to the tunnel face.

With six tunnel crushers delivered (four to Switzerland, two to Japan) in 2000, and three further orders in 2001, DBT Mineral Processing is laying claim to this market sector.

Fenner recently introduced Hi-Vis Fennerplast to improve safety and inspection performance, particularly underground.

The high visibility of its yellow covering significantly improves the sighting of conveyor moving parts and structure against the belt, also making the conveyor itself more conspicuous. The product is already in use in the UK and Canada.

Hi-Vis is said to be especially advantageous on man-riding conveyors, making belt edges more obvious to the rider.

Fenner Conveyor Belting claims to be the only true global supplier for the entire spectrum of heavyweight conveyor belting including solid-woven, rubber ply and steel cord constructions. There are manufacturing facilities in the UK, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and China.

A recent introduction from Flexco is an eight-rivet conveyor belt fastener made from special alloy designed for higher tension belts used underground.

The attachment anticipates the need for reliable splicing on longer, wider, more heavily loaded belts. The material of construction is RustAlloy, a low chrome stainless steel for superior resistance to corrosion and wear. The mechanical fastener is rated up to 263kN/m.

Also introduced is a rivet-hinged fastener made from Megalloy. Also offering superior resistance to wear and corrosion, this fastener is designed for heavy-duty applications normally using small diameter pulleys such as on portable conveyors and continuous miners.

The GHH series of articulated dumptrucks with all-wheel drive are for payloads from 15 to 50t.

Traction of all wheels which are in the driving direction keeps them on the ground, even in rugged terrain.

Other features are low body height and good stability, even at high speed; good visibility from the bi-directional driver’s compartment; safe braking with specific power rating up to 9kW/t payload for steep inclines; and extra heavy duty bearings to withstand extreme loads.

Hydraulic cylinders with forged piston rods and special screwed joints allow quick steering and operation.

The dumptruck range includes the MK-A 15.1 with a 15t payload, 7.5m³ standard body size and a 102-136 kW engine; the 20t, 10.5m³, 136kW MK-20.1; the 35t, 20m³, 206-277kW MK-A 30.1; the 40t, 24m³ 309kW MK- 40; and 50t, 26m³, 468kW MK-A 50.

Also from GHH is the Fahrlader load-haul-dump (LHD) series on 3-17 tonne capacity and bucket volumes from 1.5 to 8.5m³ in six models.

The main business of Germany-based Putzmeister AG is the manufacture of machines for pumping and placing concrete, mortar and high density solids, including their mixing, storage and distribution.

Many Putzmeister products have been developed for tunnel applications including high pressure concrete pumps which can convey concrete over long distances (lengths of more than 2,000m have been pumped horizontally) and truck mounted concrete pumps with placing booms which can be unfolded in tunnels with just 4.4m of internal height. The last boom segment can be swivelled 360° to place concrete from any position. TSV concrete distributors for tunnel formwork are rail mounted, hydraulically-driven concrete placing systems. Double piston pumps offer continuous, clean and safe conveying of muck. They can be integrated into TBMs and can be operated combined with pipe jacking. In soft ground they maintain earth and water pressure to prevent the inflow of ground water.
