Improvements in loading capacity and elongation are claimed for Swellex frictional rock bolts with the introduction of a new steel composition and heat treatment.

The range, called Swellex Manganese line, has been re-engineered by Swedish manufacturer Atlas Copco within the same geometry.

In use, bolts are placed in a hole, with high water pressure inflating the tube causing a small elastic expansion of the borehole diameter.

Water pressure is released and the surrounding rock contracts, providing the required locking effect and full column rock reinforcement, simply and quickly.

Three models of Boltec specialist rock-bolting rigs are available, all of which can be used to install both Swellex and conventional rock bolts. These range from the 232H with the LBU bolting unit, six bolt magazine and COP 1032 rock drill to 435H with the HBU bolting unit, 10 bolt magazine and COP 1432 rock drill. Depending on the model and length of rock bolt, maximum tunnel heights range from 7.1m to 11.3m.

Atlas Copco Craelius is the group company specialising in grouting technology for ground consolidation, water sealing, lining backfilling and settlement compensation. Complete Unigrout systems are available, either truck-mounted and/or containerised, to include a Cemix mixer, Cemag agitator, grout pump, hydraulic power unit, control panel and Logac recording monitor plus delivery manifold and hoses. Projects successfully using Atlas Copco grouting equipment include sewers in Hong Kong, the Lesotho Highlands water project, the North Cape road tunnel in Norway and the Arlandabahn rail tunnel in Sweden.

Tachus is working towards increased performance in tunnel construction in soft rock or soils with minimal cohesion where, in the past, excavation and shotcrete methods have predominated.

The Tachusmatic consists of a cutter, mounted in a metal frame, which is braced circumferentially into the finished concrete tube by sectional steel elements, so-called slipformers. Also within the machine frame is the mucking equipment, for example a chain conveyor.

A slit is cut out around the circumference of the tunnel in advance of excavation. When at a sufficient width, a slipformer is advanced along the line of the tunnel and a chamber created, bounded by the slipformer, the rock and the concrete support of the last section.

This chamber is filled with concrete and a segment of the tunnel support is cast, without rebound of shotcrete and without any need for support arches.
