The event will introduce school students and leavers to options for vocational and academic routes into the industry as well as possible career paths.
Topics covered will include an introduction to BTSYM and its role in developing new engineers; Tunnelling Operative Apprentice NVQ; degree apprenticeships and how they differ from traditional degrees; and experiences of recent graduates finding work and opportunities they’ve experienced.

BTSYM chair Thomas Macgowan, who will outline his career
Mike Perkins, an apprenticeship professional who, over the past three years, has supported 40 apprentices on major HS2 contracts at Chilterns, Bromford and Long Itchington Wood
Cate Anthony, an associate professor and apprenticeship tutor at the University of Warwick, who has delivered the Degree Apprenticeship (Level 6) in Civil Engineering since 2021. She has an MSc in tunnelling and underground space from the University of Warwick, is a chartered member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and has worked in industry on projects such as Bank Station, Bond Street Station upgrades and HS2
Leena Begum, who started her career as apprentice working towards a Level 3 BTEC in civil engineering. She then started a degree apprenticeship with Costain and is currently working on the tunnels at HS2 Old Oak Common, as well as studying at Kingston University for a degree in civil engineering
Annie May Goodman, who started her degree apprenticeship with Bam Nuttall in 2021 after finishing her A-Levels. She has been working at the Silvertown Tunnel project and studying at Leeds College of Building for a degree in civil engineering
Dominic De Silva, who started his degree apprenticeship with London Bridge Associates in 2021. He has worked on multiple projects while undertaking a degree in civil and infrastructure engineering at the University of Warwick.
