All roadheader excavation has been completed on Sydney’s Western Harbour Tunnel Stage 1.

The John Holland and CPB joint venture (JHCPB) completed the last section of benching under Birchgrove Road and Reuss Street in Birchgrove during the nightshift on December 10.

JHCPB began excavating the WHT tunnels in May 2021 as part of the Rozelle Interchange Project’s enabling works. The WHT Stage 1 Project officially began construction in July 2022 under Emily Street in Rozelle and has excavated a total of 7km of tunnels, including traffic tunnels, ventilation caverns, cross passages, temporary tunnels, and substations.

The tunnels will be handed over to the WHT Stage 2 contractor Acciona to continue tunnelling early next year.

The Western Harbour Tunnel will provide a new crossing of Sydney Harbour involving twin motorway tunnels connecting the M4-M5 Link at Rozelle and the Warringah Freeway at North Sydney. With three lanes in each direction, it will take pressure off the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Harbour Tunnel, Anzac Bridge and Western Distributor corridors enhancing transport capacity in and around Sydney.
