Swedish construction firm Peab has won an additional contract worth SEK368m ($34.3m)  from Stockholm Vatten och Avfall to rebuild the wastewater treatment plant in Henriksdal, Stockholm, Sweden.

Stockholm Vatten och Avfall operates Stockholm’s future wastewater treatment project.

It includes a new sewage tunnel from Bromma to the Sickla plant in Hammarbybacken, a new Sickla plant, and rebuilding Henriksdal existing basins.

Peab will rebuild the plant to install a new, improved biological treatment process as part of this project, which is an option within the existing agreement.

The work includes demolition, decontamination, and the construction of new basins. This will be carried out at the underground plant in Henrikdalsberget while it remains in operation throughout the upgrade.

Initially, Peab was awarded a contract worth SEK254m to rebuild this wastewater treatment plant in March 2021.

Peab region manager Carl Johan Söderberg said: “We’re pleased with the continued confidence in us from Stockholm Vatten och Avfall and that now we’ll begin to work on rebuilding Henriksdal’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.

“Through continued good cooperation we’ll make sure that the treatment plant functions with minimal disruption during construction.”

Work will commence in April 2025 and is scheduled for completion by spring 2028.

Henriksdal wastewater treatment plant was built in the 1930s in rock above the ground. As Stockholm expanded, Henriksdal underwent several upgrades.

As of now, the plant has two facilities, Henriksdal and Sickla, which are connected by two 1km tunnels.

The ongoing Stockholm Future Wastewater treatment (SFA) project aims to double its capacity to serve 1.6 million people. In 2016, Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) signed a ten-year SEK3bn loan with the City of Stockholm to build an underground wastewater treatment plant.

The project also involves decommissioning the Bromma plant, freeing land for development. Wastewater will be directed to the expanded Henriksdal plant through the new 14km Bromma Tunnel, which is also blasted into the rock beneath Stockholm.
