Hong Kong Construction Holdings has linked up with Shanghai’s Outer-Ring Tunnel Project Construction Company to advise on the US$132.5M, 2.9km long Taihelu immersed tube tunnel across the Huangpu river in Shanghai, China.

The Outer-Ring Tunnel Project Construction Company has already started fabrication of the segments for the tunnel which the Chinese claim will be the longest immersed tube in Asia and the third longest in the world.

"The tunnel will complete the whole outer ring, serving as the best traffic solution to Baoshan District in the north of Shanghai," said Xia Heping, an official with the tunnel company.

The river crossing will form part of Shanghai’s 98km outer ring road that is expected to ease traffic throughout the city. The tunnel, which is due to open to traffic in 2002, is one of three road tunnels and a bridge crossing the Huangpu river which are expected to be completed by 2005.
