Gammon India has won a US$35 million order to complete the 100MW Karbi Langpi hydro-electric project that was started by the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) in 1979. Focus is on completing tunnel works by March 2003. ASEB is able to complete the scheme following a loan from the Power Finance Corporation. Work on the concrete gravity dam initially started in September 1979 but came to a standstill in 1993 following the collapse of the successive contractors and ASEB’s cash flow problems. Legal wrangles have only recently been settled.
