Work has begun on the 1.6km, 5.8m diameter single- tube Kawaseki Tunnel in the Prefecture of Wakayama, Japan. Contracting JV Kumagai Gumi/Toa is excavating the tunnel using drill+blast through granite porphyry and mudrock. The tunnel is scheduled for completion in summer 2001.
