Hong Kong’s Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) is working on plans to build a tunnel for freight trains between Tai Wai and the Kwai Chung container port. The US$1.3bn project would re-place plans to extend the West Rail line from Kam Tin to the boundary crossing at Lok Ma Chau.

KCRC chairman Yeung Kai-yin confirmed a 7km tunnel link would be cheaper and more cost-effective than building Phase 2 of West Rail because of the time and cost involv-ed in buying all the land needed:

"One of the alternatives is to build a tunnel south west from Tai Wai to exit at container terminal 8 where the container freight terminus is planned."
