Atkins China is inviting contractors to prequalify for construction of two tunnels as part of a larger US$450M reclamation scheme in Hong Kong’s central business district. One tunnel comprises a 950m long structure as a proposed extension to the Route 7 highway that will run along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island. The second is a 500m long rail tunnel for the Mass Transit Railway Corporation that will initially be used as overrun tunnel for the Airport Express and Tung Chung line. Later the tunnel will become a component of the North Island Line.
Both structures will be built within the 18ha harbour front reclamation that will run from Central’s Star Ferry pier to close to Wan Chai’s convention centre where Britain formally handed over control of Hong Kong to China in 1997.
Other parts of the project include the construction of about 1.2km of seawall, 2.5km of roads, a 200m long road underpass, 900m of box culverts, stormwater drainage and sewerage works.
