Three contracting groups have submitted tenders for the construction of the US$300M first phase of Rio de Janeiro’s Line 3 metro system.

The three are: Construtora Fluminense, a JV between Queiroz Galvao and Carioca Engenharia; Construtor Metro Rio, a partnership between Andrade Gutierrez, Camargo Correa, OAS and CBPO; and Brazilian engineering company Mendes Junior bidding alone.

The government hoped to make the award at the end of March ready for construction to start in April. Work, on the 22km section between Niteroi and Sao Goncalo, will take about 42 months.

Officials are also working on plans for the second stage, linking Niteroi and Rio de Janeiro, although the federal government has yet to approve funding for an important tunnel section under Guanabara Bay after it was left out of the government’s 2002 budget.

Brazilian transport company T’Trans in joint venture with Pem Engenharia, is the sole bidder for a 25-year concession to operate Line 3.
