Australian outfit, Transfield Engineering began its first Hong Kong contract last month with the start of the US$48.17M Kai Tak Transfer Scheme.
In alliance with the China Harbour Engineering Company Group, Transfield is responsible for the construction of a 5m i.d, 1.5km long stormwater drainage tunnel, along with access shafts and the drainage culverts in the Kai Tak area of Kowloon. It is using a 5.15m, 640kW Herrenknecht Mixshield TBM (pictured) to bore thorough the fresh and weathered granite, and alluvium.
The JV beat off stiff competition from 12 domestic and International contractors to be shortlisted as one of four tenderers in June 2000.
The contract could signal the start of more work for Transfield in Hong Kong. The Australian construction company is already looking to the future and is looking to further the partnership.
“China Harbour and Transfield Engineering and Construction are also involved in pre-qualification for other Hong Kong projects,” Bruce James, Transfield’s chief executive officer, said.
Transfield’s managing director, Guido Belgiorno-Nettis, added “I have the highest confidence of a successful partnership”.
