Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corporation, in southern Taiwan, has awarded two tunnelling contracts for parts of its mass transit system

The first US$213M contract was awarded to Gamuda (Malaysia), in Joint Venture with New Asia Cons-truction & Development Corporation, to build two stations and tunnels.

Work, forming contract C04 on the Orange line, involves the construction of a 4.8km stretch of 5.6m diameter bored tunnel, a 1km section of cut and cover tunnel, plus two stations. Completion is in four years.

The second contract has been awarded to Japan’s Maeda Corporation, which has won a US$123.4M deal to build 1.7km of bored tunnel together with three stations.

Construction is set to start this month and should take 30 months.
