Tenders should be invited this summer for the construction of the 11.6km-long Wienerwald rail tunnel in Vienna, Austria.

Currently under design, the tender documents for the twin-bore tunnel are being prepared for the option of either NATM or TBM construction. The estimated value is US$240M-US$290M.

Josef Daller, partner at iC Consulenten, said that the client hopes to attract wider attention to the project by giving the potential contractor the choice of excavation. This seldom-used technique will “let the market decide which is the most economical method,” Daller said.
