A 5.9km long road tunnel is being considered as one of three options for the construction of a road link between Xiamen, an island city in China’s Fujian province, and the mainland. A three-day meeting, held in early April 2003 at the request of the State Development Planning Commission, failed to decide whether a tunnel, bridge or causeway-style link should be built.

The event was organised by the China International Engineering Consulting Company.

The road link, the third connecting Xiamen and the mainland, would run from Wutong, north-east of Xiamen city, to Liuwudian in the Tong’an district. It could be completed by 2010.

The tunnel or bridge would shorten the distance between Xiamen City to the provincial capital, Fuzhou, by 15km. Xiamen is close to Taiwan.
