Another Indian tunnel construction site was hit by torrential rain last month with the resulting floods killing at least 20 people. The death toll could double as others were not accounted for.

A cloud burst in the mountains caused flash floods, which washed away labourers’ tents. Rescue operations were set up nearby to search for survivors.

Most of the victims were working on the Rohtang tunnel project, in the Kullu district of Himachel Pradesh.

The US$102M Rohtang road tunnel project will provide an all-weather tunnel from northern Himachel Pradesh to Lahaul-Spiti and Laddakh. The 9km long tunnel will be the highest in the country, at 3,000m above sea-level.

Last month another tunnel construction site in Himachel Pradesh was hit by flash floods killing scores of construction workers working on a hydropower project in the region.
