Russia is planning to spend a massive US$13.65bn over the next 13 years on the construction and expansion of metro lines in 12 cities.

Construction would include 227km of underground railway and 139 underground stations by 2015, said Nikolai Koshman, chairman of the Government Construction Committee (Gosstroi). He said underground rail networks are planned or under construction in Omsk, Chelyabinsk, Krasnoyarsk, Kazan and Ufa, while those in Moscow, St Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Samara and Ekaterinburg are completed or being extended.
