The Maharashtra state cabinet of ministers has approved a proposal for an underground metro project for Mumbai, India that will link the north-south and east-west transport corridors through the city.

The government, at state and national level, will fund the project, with additional monies being raised through the World Bank and other funding agencies.

Talking to Indian press, Chief Minister, Sushilkumar Shinde, described how the US$706M Phase 1 of the project features an 8km long underground line between Colaba, in the south of Mumbai, to Mahalaxmi. Mahalaxmi would be connected to Mahim by means of an elevated railway.

Shinde explained that additional metro lines were planned, to link Colaba with Charkop in the northern part of Mumbai, and from Mahim to Mankurd in the east.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has been asked to produce a project report on the Mumbai metro, whilst the state cabinet is amending legislation to promote the project’s development.
