B angkok’s Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) is set to spend 240bn baht (US$6.14bn) over the next six years building three extensions, totalling 110km, to its existing rail network. Most of the railway will be built in tunnel.
The plans were approved by the transport minister and the Traffic and Transport Policy and Planning Office and final government approval was expected by the end of February, as T&TI went to press. If the extensions are approved construction would begin within the next 18 months.
In a recent poll by the University of Bangkok, 89% of those asked said they supported extensions of Bangkok’s rail system.
