Swiss voters have overwhelmingly rejected a second trans-Alpine road tunnel proposed for the Gotthard Pass.

All of the country’s cantons and 63% of the voters in a national referendum said no to the scheme, going firmly against the positive vote given to the plan by the Swiss Parliament last year. The US$24bn scheme also included plans for new connecting highways.

Despite supporters citing that the notorious bottlenecks needed combating, opponents argued that the tunnel would undermine Swiss efforts to reduce roadfreight.

Supporters have said the “result was a missed opportunity in Swiss transport policy”.
