A recently discovered three storey deep “underground city ” in Iran that is thought to date from 224 A.D. is under threat from sewage leaks.

The city at Noush Abad in central Iran varies from 2.5m to 18m deep and “features labyrinth-like structures”. Lack of a proper sewage network in the city means many residents dig wells on their properties. Reports of underground corridors and chambers encountered whilst digging the wells led archaeologists to investigate and prompted the discovery of the underground city.

Ironically, it is the same private wells that are thought to be leaking causing damage to the underground structures and the archaeologists are now urging the local municipality to build a new sewage system.
