Nordic contractor, NCC, has been awarded two phases of the Malmö City Tunnel for the Swedish Railway Administration. The total value of the order is approximately US$217M. The Malmö Central Lower section features a ramp from a rail yard that becomes part of a tunnel section and also includes a station. The Hyllie – Vintries contract covers 4km of terracing and includes the construction of seven bridges, tunnels and a drainage system. Both contracts are scheduled to commence in 2005, subject to an approved environmental assessment.
NCC has also announced that it has been commissioned to construct a railway junction in Arlöv, to the north of central Malmö. The client is again the Swedish Railway Administration, with an order worth US$16M. The assignment includes a 210m long concrete tunnel for two tracks with adjacent drainage system. In addition there is a requirement for 500m of retaining walls and 450m of soundproofing shields. The works are required to accommodate a switch for Swedish lefthand running trains and Danish righthand running trains in a grade separated junction.
