At a recent water exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, MI Pipes who are represented in Europe, Africa and the Middle East by Charador, put on display their new large diameter re-lining pipe. The re-lining pipe was designed to slip-line a 4m i.d. pipe which operates at pressures of up to 16 bar. The enormous pipe, which caused quite a stir at the exhibition, is thought to be largest slip-line pipe that has been made to date.
MI Pipes are expecting an enormous interest for this re-lining pipe from pipeline owners who are struggling to find solutions for large diameter pipes that have reached the end of their design lives or which have suffered from corrosion problems.

The popular AVN series of small bore machines range from the AVN 250 up to the AVN 1200 TC. All feature a full face cutting machine, open mode wheels with hardfacing that can be equipped with metal picks, ripper chisels or spade type cutting teeth, depending on soil conditions. Cutter discs can be fitted to the head for pipe-jacking. Excavation diameters range from 368mm up to 1.96m.
Also available from Herrenknecht is the T and D series slurry shield machines. The 1.8m diameter AVN 1500T has a retention length through rock of over 500m made possible as roller bits can be replaced. This reduces the number of intermediate shafts thereby reducing costs. The D series slurry machines range from the 1600 D with a diameter of 1.98m to the 2400 D with a 2.8m diameter. The D series features a Hydroshield that is better deployed in variable soils. EPB shield machines are also available primarily for use in soft ground.
Modular designed Herrenknecht HDD-rigs are a proven product innovation in horizontal directional drilling worldwide. To quickly deploy these Maxi and Mega Rigs, with forces of 100t to 400t (HK100M, HK200M, HK300M, and HK400M), the Modular-System Design was developed. The rigs are divided in three components. These modules have a maximum weight of 20t and can be assembled and hydraulically tensioned on site.

The benefits of trenchless technology were demonstrated recently when a large section of trunk sewer collapsed in Geelong, Australia. The 1350mm diameter reinforced concrete pipeline, collapsed after heavy rain following a prolonged period of drought. The depth and location of the pipeline meant repairs would need to be made with minimal excavation. In addition, the main could not be out of service during repair and total by-pass pumping was not an option.
Rotaloc is a spirally wound PVC liner which is installed by a winding machine travelling inside the compromised pipeline. The pipe is not blocked during installation and while flows need to be managed, the pipeline does not need to be taken out of service.
Based on the assumption the pipeline at Geelong had no remaining strength, Interflow proposed using a liner capable of taking all applied loads. The first challenge to face Interflow was the removal of debris. More than 40m3 of silt had washed in and in some places filled the pipeline to 40% of its diameter. Following the successful removal of the debris, installation of the liner began.
Services to Barwon Water customers were maintained throughout the project. All work was carried out after 10pm during periods of low flow. Each night, winding of the liner would cease while pump stations operated to relieve upstream storage capacity and until the flow subsided. The damaged sewer was successfully repaired with minimal inconvenience to the community.

Radiodetection Trenchless Products has added a new sonde to its existing DrillTrack system. The ‘WireLine System’ has been developed to enable users of HDD machines to carry out operations longer and deeper than before and also in areas of very high interference, such as city centres and river and road crossings.
The Wireline System involves a Wireline interface box and a DataSonde that is powered by a cable from the interface box on the drilling machine. The CableSonde sends information, such as roll and tilt angle, back via the interface box to the DataView. The signal emitted by the DataSonde is also picked up by the DrillTrack G2 receiver.
When conditions do not allow the operator to physically track the DataSonde, e.g. when crossing a river or busy road, the receiver is placed ahead of the obstacle and it becomes a stationary target. Steering information is radioed to the DataView allowing the drilling direction to be changed. The DataView is positioned at the drilling machine, and a radio link to the receiver allows the information from the DataSonde to be retransmitted in real time to the DataView, displayed on the large LCD screen.

Symmetrix is a simple concentric method of drilling through overburden with casing from Finnish company Rotex. It can drill straight holes at any angle from vertical to horizontal equally effectively and to depths over 100m.
A pilot bit is attached to the ring bit with a bayonet coupling. Both rotate to cut a hole large enough to allow the casing shoe to pull down the casing pipe. The flushing air is ejected through the holes in the face of the pilot bit and returns to the annulus ensuring high flushing speed. When the hole is complete the pilot bit is unlocked and withdrawn through the casing pipe, which can also be retrieved. Drilling can be continued using a standard bit.

VMT has now supplied guidance systems for extended distance and curved pipejacking applications on approaching 100 projects.
The drives, totalling over 130, have ranged in size from 900mm to 3.8m in diameter. The lengths involved are up to 1,596m from a single shaft, with eight of these drives having been in excess of 1,000m. The curves involved have had radii down to 300m. The use of vertical curves on several river crossings for gas pipelines has proved particularly beneficial.
The ability to execute precision guided drives has enabled the pipejacking principle to extend its use and application. Designers are now including curves in their designs, sometimes complex with both left and right horizontal curves, occasionally both horizontal and vertical in the same project.
