Rescue efforts have been called to a halt in China after officials said there was no hope of survival for the 11 miners trapped in a flooded tunnel.

The 7,879m long railway tunnel was under construction in Lichuan, Hubei province. The tunnel flooded on 21 January at 10:50am according to the Ministry of Railways. When the incident occurred, 14 workers were at the scene. Three managed to escape and said they were more than 3km from the portal when the tunnel flooded.

The tunnel is a major part of the railway from Yichang of Hubei to Wanzhou of Chongqing Municipality.
