In Mid-April, a ceremony was held to mark the breakthrough of the 5.4km long Katschberg motorway tunnel in the Carinthia region of Austria.
The A10 Tauernautobahn Katschbergtunnel 2 Tube project is being carried out for client Autobahnen und Schnellstraßen Finanzierungs Ag (ASFINAG) to relieve traffic demands on the first tube. Austria’s Geoconsult is ASFINAG’s primary consultant on the scheme, which has been excavated using NATM.
The 88.5-107.3m2 drill and blast tunnel is supported via anchors, wire mesh, steel arches and shotcrete depending upon the NATM criteria for rock class. The geology comprises phyllites, gneisses and schists.
Construction started in May last year and should run until November next year. Currently the crown has been completed and at the time of writing, the bench had been excavated 600m. The Katschbergtunnel JV building the tunnel has used Atlas Copco, Liebherr, GHH and Meyco equipment for excavation and support.
The US$61.9M scheme is being financed by ASFINAG.
