The Milwaukee Northwest Side Relief Sewer project was presented with a Project of the Year award by the American Public Works Association (APWA) on 11 September during the APWA International Public Works Congress and Exposition in Kansas City, US.

The award was accepted by representatives from Black & Veatch, the primary consultant and design engineer; Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), the managing agency; and SheaKenny JV, the primary contractor.

Costing in excess of US$125M, the 6.7m diameter, 11.4km long tunnel was seven years in the planning, design and construction. The tunnel was designed for maximum groundwater quality protection and acts as a tank sewer, providing 89M gallons of additional storage.

Acknowledging the award and praising the project team, Dan McCarthy, president and CEO of the water business of Black & Veatch said: “Progressive risk management and careful planning added project value for our Milwaukee clients. The project team achieved on-schedule, under-budget performance despite the many risks inherent in a tunnel of this magnitude.”
