After high winds delayed initial scheduled weekend attempts to lift the first sections of what is claimed to be the world’s largest span of corrugated steel rail tunnel into place in Wales, contractor Costain was able to execute the task at the end of May. The tunnel has a span of 15.5m and is more than 52m long in total. It was supplied by Asset International using its ‘Stren-Cor’ steel bridge system and was built in three sections weighing 43 tonnes, which were lifted into place and joined by in-situ closure rings over weekend track possessions running into June. Backfilling over the tunnel was planned to start in July. The client was Carmarthenshire County Council, which is building the Morfa-Berwick link road that passes over the main rail line between south Wales and London. The link road is to be completed by January 2008.
