A Herrenknecht EPBM will deal with rock strengths up to 190MPa, and 10 bar of external water pressure.
The contract forms part of Severn Trent’s overall Strategic Resilience Plan to secure Birmingham’s water supply for the next century, which was approved by the regulator, Ofwat, in the Final Determination published last December.
A Barhale spokesman said: "Severn Trent’s Strategic Grid Team, working closely with feasibility consultant Atkins Arup, tendered the four projects in record-breaking time to ensure that the ODI obligation date can be met for the first project of March 2017. The team is now to co-locate at Barhale’s Walsall office, in order to achieve the start on-site date of October and take delivery of the new TBM early in 2016.
