The Rocket Boomer E-series from Atlas Copco is the first generation of drill rigs equipped with the new BUT 45 boom, the result of two years of field-testing under Nordic conditions. The BUT 45 boom represents a rethink of the rotation units, resulting in the BHR 20 with its double-rotation head, according to Atlas Copco.

Offering ±190° of rotation around the axis of the boom, and a choice of top or side-mounted feeds, the BHR 20 is claimed to open the way to faster boom and feed movements when drilling the tunnel face or roof. With ±135° of sideways boom rotation and higher bracing force, crosscut and rock bolt drilling is said to require fewer set-ups.

Atlas Copco says that the higher carrying capacity of the BUT 45 allows more flexibility of choice of boom-mounted options. More importantly, the company adds, the increased boom stiffness permits a longer boom extension and more accurate positioning, resulting in greater coverage area and more precise drilling.

Ten models of the new Rocket Boomer E-series will replace the computerised rigs in the L-series. The E-series rigs will be equipped with one to four booms, depending on customer requirements, and will feature the third-generation computerised Rig Control System RCS3 designed to improve control of the drilling process, and boom and feed movements.

The COP 3038 rock drill, claimed to be the fastest in the field with a top penetration rate of more than 5m/min, can be fitted to the E-series Rocket Boomers, further increasing performance, says Atlas Copco.
