Among the products offered by Herrenknecht Formwork Technology, a subsidiary of Herrenknecht AG, are mould systems for casting segments, handling and transport equipment and turnkey segment production plants. The lining segment production solutions are claimed to be tailored to each project and its construction site.

For the Mont Sion Road Tunnel for the A 41 in France, with a length of 2 x 2914m and a diameter of 11.84m, Herrenknecht set up a lining segment factory on site. This has been producing an average of 60 segments daily since September 2006.

Herrenknecht has also developed a formwork concept claimed to make the flexible and economical production of tunnel segments possible. These segments can be used for supply tunnels with a diameter of two to four meters and allow a tunnel to be excavated and lined in one single working step.

Says the company: “The Combisegment concept enables more efficient tunnel construction and the segment production itself is economical thanks to the innovative design of the formwork.”

In this formwork, tailor-made segments for the construction of various tunnel types can be cast whether they are to serve for water supply and wastewater disposal (segments with integrated GRP-Inliner) or fire-safe cable protection, says Herrenknecht. A high degree of standardisation is said to make this possible.

Compared with conventional two-leaf construction, Combisegments are claimed to prove their value by reducing the wall thickness, which results in smaller exterior tunnel diameters. Herrenknecht says that less concrete is needed for the segments and less excavated material needs to be removed and deposited, resulting in lower transport costs and a more rapid project realisation.
