The company will start negotiations with the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority in the coming weeks after the latter voted in favour of conducting a feasibility study into the proposal.

TBC has been chosen from a shortlist of five companies bidding to provide a transport link between San Antonio International Airport and downtown. The project is estimated to cost between US$247-289m.

TBC’s proposal is for twin underground tunnels that would be used by Tesla vehicles to transport passengers. It is the latest in a series of hyperloop proposals made by Elon Musk’s company.

Last year the 1.7 mile-long Las Vegas Convention Centre hyperloop opened. Work is now under way on the Vegas Loop and in February the TBM broke through at Resorts World, laying the groundwork for the loop’s first station. The Vegas Loop is a 29-mile tunnel network with 51 stations along The Strip and will also serve the Allegiant Stadium and the University of Nevada. The Boring Company estimates it will carry up to 57,000 passengers per hour.

Also in February, TBC submitted plans for a loop tunnel around North Miami Beach. The 6.2-mile tunnel, running between Golden Glades Transit Center and Sunny Isles Beach at Newport Pier, would have seven stations and be able to transport more than 7,500 people per hour.
