The Robbins Company offers a full line of excavation equipment for utility installation. “The machines have been proven on hundreds of projects around the world, including a large natural gas pipeline project in the UK,” the company says. Two Small Boring Units (SBU-As) and two Motorised Small Boring Units (SBU-Ms) are being used to bore 110 crossings for the pipeline, which will extend over 300km across South Wales.

SBU-As utilise a full-face auger to bore through rock from 28MPa to more than 172MPa UCS, and are available in diameters ranging from 0.6m to 2m. For bores longer than 150m, where line and grade are critical, Robbins also offers the SBU-M. The machine, available in diameters from 1.2m to 1.8m, uses a small in-shield motor to provide torque and can be steered from an operator’s console inside the rear shield.

Robbins Auger Boring Machines (ABMs) can be used in conjunction with both SBU-As and SBU-Ms for maximal thrust and torque capabilities in hard rock.

Robbins Rockheads are an ideal option for the longest bores in hard rock (over 100m in length). The machines are a type of small diameter tunnel boring machine, available from 1.4m to 2.1m in diameter. Rockheads generate their own forward thrust and torque, and are available in Single Shield and Double Shield models (SBU-RHSS and SBU-RHDS).
