AEL’s Ring 2000 and AEL Tunnel 2000 are CAD packages designed to facilitate easy and efficient blasting. AEL developed its Ring 2000 software to assist its blasting engineers with the design and optimisation of ring blast layouts. A powerful feature of the software is the ability to examine ‘what if’ situations by easily changing blasting parameters and see the effect on the total rock breaking costs.
AEL’s Tunnel 2000 has been designed to optimise blast layouts in mining and civil engineering applications. Outputs include scaled printouts of blast hole layouts, analysis of blasting efficiencies, customisable instruction sheets for production crews, XYZ co-ordinates for automated drilling equipment, blast cost details and summary reports.

Itasca’s FLAC (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua) is a two-dimensional continuum code for modelling soil, rock and structural behaviour. It can be applied to a broad range of problems in engineering studies. The explicit finite difference formulation of the code is said to make FLAC suited for modelling geomechanical problems that consist of several stages, such as sequential excavation, backfilling and loading. The formulation can accommodate large displacements and strains and non-linear material behaviour, even if yield or failure occurs over a large area or if total collapse occurs. FLAC3D simulates the behaviour of three-dimensional structures built in soil, rock or other materials that undergo plastic flow when their yield limits are reached. It uses the same mixed discretisation scheme as FLAC to provide accurate modelling of plastic collapse and flow.
UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code) is for problems with jointed rock systems or assemblages of discrete blocks subjected to quasistatic or dynamic conditions, and 3DEC is its three-dimensional extension.

Australia’s Maptek provides a wide range of software for the mining and tunnelling industries. The recently released VULCAN Software 4.5 marks another milestone in Maptek’s software development history. VULCAN remains one of the most advanced 3D modelling and visualisation tools available for the resource industry. However, with version 4.5, the third dimension becomes even more striking and real, with the development of a completely new graphics engine.
External integration to corporate databases is standard. Users can explore the fast and secure ISIS databases, or access industry standard databases. Powerful CAD editing tools, exemplified in previous VULCAN systems, have been further enhanced giving greater control over data. Open cut and underground functionality have also been further extended and great advances have been made in hydrogeology and environmental modelling.

Primavera helped launch the PC based project management software revolution in 1983 and continues to lead web-based and enterprise-class project management, control and execution software.
Primavera’s Enterprise goes beyond traditional project management systems that approach managing multiple projects in much the same way they approach managing individual projects – focusing on only the project manager’s requirements for project planning and scheduling. In addition to helping project managers better manage projects that are underway, Primavera Enterprise helps organisations neutralise the risk of taking on new projects by evaluating projects individually, in relationship to each other and in accordance with strategic initiatives. Every project can be judged against its impact on cash flow, commitments to customers, resource bandwidth and the company’s ROI objectives.
