Nearly half of Copenhagen’s 13km long metro is routed in twin tunnel beneath the heart of the city centre. Some 7.5km of twin, 4.9m diameter running tunnel link six deep open cut station boxes excavated by the top down method through central city streets. Between the stations, several of the nine, 25m deep ventilation shafts double as construction access points. As the metro emerges above ground, a southern 5km elevated section serves six more stations, opening up development land on Amager Island.

The contract to construct a 2km surface level northern extension has already been let, mainly to local contractors. A decision on construction of a southern 4km link to the airport is expected later this year.
