It was an equipment evaluation and communication problem in the 1960s that led to the field demonstration concept of the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE) of today. Illinois Bell invited 12 trencher manufacturers to demonstrate equipment in the same field, on the same day in the summer of 1966. The goal was (and still is) to have machinery exhibited in job-like conditions where attendees can experience first-hand equipment in action, working at ground level, underground, and overhead.

Also known as the Demo Expo, ICUEE’s organiser, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), says it has grown to be North America’s largest utility and construction show. There are more than 28 acres of indoor and outdoor exhibition space and more than 18,000 attendees are expected for 2019.

In addition to its reputation as a hands-on equipment show, AEM offers an education component through field classes and workshops ranging from specific topics (fundamentals of HDD) to broader themes (“experience six brief safety talks that you can take immediately back to your team”).

“We had a great turnout and participation at ICUEE 2017,” said Rick Rodier, vice president, Sitework Systems Division of The Toro Company and 2017 ICUEE chair.

“It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm of so many utility and construction professionals networking and sharing ideas, and finding the product innovations and solutions that will help them grow their businesses.”
