The DIBIT tunnel scanner is a photogrammetric measuring system for monitoring tunnelling progress providing a 3D model as well as photographic images. The model has a grid of up to 10mm x 10mm and software that produces profiles, elevation plots or cross sections. Digital images are stored on a PC.

It can be used for

  • monitoring of underground structures and deformation measurements related to tunnel surface movements;
  • quantative assessment for calculations of volume, area, plus histograms;
  • quality management regarding shotcrete thickness, profile accuracy (over- and under-break) and lining surface conditions;
  • operations scheduling for restoring tunnel profile, waterproofing systems, and installing formwork for permanent concrete lining.
  • The system uses two CCD cameras mounted on a portable unit automatically positioned by a self-targeting theodolite using co-ordinates established during the tunnel survey.

    Encore has been supplying borehole survey tools for 20 years. Its new, all solid state, SmartTool range includes single-shot, continuous survey and non-magnetic systems. These work in all directions, in any size of hole and download to CAD systems using a unique radio link. At the drill rig, innovation makes it easy; there are no films, chemicals, cables, batteries or computers.

    Geokon has recently introduced a wide range of vibrating wire instruments constructed entirely from corrosion resistant titanium designed for use in highly aggressive environments. Titanium’s corrosion resistance is acheived by a protective, durable, stable and strongly adherent oxide film. The material can heal this film almost instantly in any environment where a trace of moisture or oxygen is present.

    With offices in North and South America and Hong Kong, Ruen Drilling has been operating for nearly 30 years specialising in geotechnical drilling relating to tunnel design. Its work includes horizontal and inclined coring, using in-hole steering motors, survey tools, and related in-hole testing and instrumentation. The company worked on Route 9 and 10 in Hong Kong and projects in the US.

    Slope Indicator offers the Bassett convergence system that provides automated surveys of a tunnel section such as recording behaviour and monitoring deformation.

    The system uses tilt sensor to monitor the position of reference pins installed in a tunnel section. The sensors are linked to the pins via a system of low-profile arms. Spacial displacement of the pins results in changed tilt readings. A complete survey of a typical tunnel section requires about five seconds. A computer automatically retrieves the tilt reading from the data logger in the tunnel, calculates the displacement data, and generates a graphic display.

    The Bassett system can detect deformations as small as 0.02mm and tolerates vibration, temperature fluctuations, electromagnetic emissions and minor impacts. Other features of the system include a low profile design and customised graphical display software.

    The Trolex Enviro Sensorstation is a fixed sensor station that simultaneously monitors up to five different gases together with ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure. Additional auxiliary input allows for air flow, smoke or dust monitoring.

    The system offers built in visual and audible alarms and three alarm output contacts for remote alarm or control functions, while RS485/MODBUS data output for up to 32 Enviro Sensorstations allows for multipoint monitoring.

    The system can be linked to leaky feeder systems. It is designed for heavy duty operation and is dust- and waterproof with an AP66 rating.

    The plug-in sensor modules carry in-built data about the identity of the unit, including gas concentration ranges and units of measurement.

    Mounting plates offer side impact protection with a weather shield, battery back-up options and modem for long distance communications.
