Atlas Copco Craelius has developed a wide range of ground engineering plant and equipment used in many situations including underground construction. The organisation has a particular expertise in grouting for ground consolidation, preventing groundwater passage, cavity filling and sealing rock anchors.
Grouting systems consist of a mixer, agitator, grout pump, grout injection recorder and hole packers. Craelius’ Unigrout is a complete grouting plant (skid- or truck-mounted if required), which includes all the necessary equipment. All systems are driven by the proven PUG hydraulic power units and controlled from a central panel. Individually, the Cemix mixer produces a uniform mix without lumps or aggregations. The Cemag agitator provides a counter-current to keep the mix in suspension whilst releasing air bubbles. Streamlined grout channels are self-cleaning for easy servicing.
Ground engineering drilling equipment includes Mustang multi-purpose rigs in three models of various configurations including DTH, rotary, and top-hammer drifter drilling methods. Atlas Copco COP series hydraulic drills are available for grout holes of 35-76 mm diameter (models COP 1032 to COP 1800). Mustangs can be used for grouting, jet grouting and anchoring and are available in four models with torques from 5000Nm to 13,000Nm and lifting capacities from 4t to 9t.

NV Bekaert are the manufacturers and suppliers of the original Dramix steel wire fibres for reinforcement for concrete used in underground construction.
The first UK steel fibre segmental lining was used at the Heathrow Baggage tunnel in 1994 and from that point Dramix has been used in several pre-cast linings around the UK. In projects overseas the first use was in 1989 in Eastern Sicily. Dramix is currently being used in running tunnels at CTRL 220/240/103 and is soon to reinforce the extensions into the new Terminal 5 complex at Heathrow.
Dramix has been used for many years around the world in deep mining and civil tunnels as well as repairs and refurbishment of old tunnels. The hooked end provides excellent anchorage in the concrete matrix and this provides high performance in toughness.
Bekaert have now also developed a new high carbon Dramix fibre that provides high levels of ductile behaviour or toughness in high strength concrete. The Dramix still has the classic shape and features, but now has a tensile strength of over 2400MPa thus providing excellent performance in the sprayed concrete currently being placed at T5 and soon to be used at the Kings Cross redevelopment project in Central London.

Specially designed tanks and mixing pumps make ChemGrout colloidal mixing both efficient and profitable. Water and solid materials are drawn through the high-speed diffuser type pump, rotating at speeds of up to 2,000rpm, to prevent flocculation and achieve complete particle wetness. Mixing time is significantly reduced by the high shear action of the colloidal mixing pump, aided by a unique powered bridge breaker device that enhances pump flow rates. This high shearing action has shown to increase apparent fluidity of slurry mixes by 20% over paddle mixers, an important advantage for dam, rock and soil grouting where the ability to penetrate tight formations is necessary.
The CG-600 Series is a heavy duty, high volume colloidal grout plant favoured for heavy construction projects. This unit features a high speed-mixing pump that thoroughly wets each particle and discharges the mixed material into a 13 cubic foot capacity agitating holding tank. A direct-coupled progressing cavity pump delivers slurries at a rate of up to 20gpm and pressures of up to 261psi. Power options are air, hydraulic, electric/hydraulic or diesel/hydraulic.

Dätwyler specialises in the design and production of rubber and plastic profiles. The company’s compression gaskets have sliding surfaces for better behaviour of the keystone and soft corners to avoid spalling whilst its hydro-expansive gaskets offer immediate water-tightness, increased volume, and increased contact pressure by expansion of the seal. Datwyler’s co-extruded gaskets offer increased water tightness using a hydro-expansive top layer. Apart from immediate water tightness, there are additional safety issues if gaps open between segments water pressures, a hard body profile with soft, hydro-expansive top and lips is available.
Modular requirements include: additional safety for specific zones using DaetSwell profiles; provision of hydro swelling surfaces for delayed gap opening; protection against aggressive soil or water, using profile protection surfaces; low friction on the keystone, using sliding surfaces; and Dätwyler standard EPDM profiles for watertightness.
Specialised technology uses a co-extruded profile for: additional safety in the event of tunnel deformation; risk reduction; long term protection against aggressive groundwater; individual project solutions; and additional advantages at low cost.

Doka Formwork Technology

Depending on the situation on-site, travelling a forming carriage on heavy-duty rollers may require time-consuming lining and levelling adjustments. Repositioning the carriage by means of flanged wheels running on rails is equally laborious, as these rails (or travelling profiles) have to be re-laid for every new section. In Austria’s Kirchham by-pass project, this was why the forming carriage being used for a cut and cover tunnel was fitted with the first-ever Doka hydraulic crawler drives. These drives, each with 5t of motive power, are suitable for highly varied transportation tasks on hard, flat surfaces such as a previously cast base slab. The crawler drives can move high loads of up to 20t each, much more gently than transport rollers.
Made of Doka SL-1 system components, the forming carriage being used on the Kirchham cut and cover tunnel site advances at a speed of approx. 1km/h. Integral turntables make it easy to correct the direction of travel. Two of the four crawler units have a hydraulic drive. They are operated by just one man, via a hydraulic unit. The diagonal arrangement of the driven crawler units ensures that the forming carriage can also be moved sideways if the on-site situation requires it.

Barchip reinforcing fibre is a structural synthetic fibre for shotcrete and concrete. Barchip fibre is suitable for use: as shotcrete reinforcement for permanent works and repair work; in precast concrete such as tunnel segments; and in ready mix concrete.
Launched earlier this year Barchip Kyodo is the latest in the range of structural fibres from EPC. Barchip Kyodo offers even greater toughness per kg whilst maintaining all the benefits of the original Barchip fibre that has seen widespread use in North America, Australasia, Japan and Europe. Barchip’s unique engineered design incorporates an embossed texture and surface coating that enhances mixability.
The embossing gives the fibre exactly the right amount of concrete/fibre bond so as to resist pullout but also prevent the fibre from snapping, ensuring equivalent post crack performance to steel fibre. Other advantages include: no rusting; no risk of puncture injury – common with contact with steel fibres; alleviates the problem of ‘short circuiting’ electrical trailing cables; enhances the shotcrete’s fire resistance; and less weight for handling when dosing fibres.
