Herrenknecht offers a range of mobile equipment for the refurbishment of road and rail tunnels. The equipment facilitates the refurbishment of tunnels to modern safety regulations, and improved service life. Concrete layers are removed from the walls of the tunnel. Subsequently, the tunnel can be re-lined with the addition of a fire-protection coating made of specially produced shotcrete. “The entire refurbishment process is mechanised – with construction progress of up to 12m per 24 hours,” says the company. Three mobile units carry out the operation processes and can be used for tunnels with various diameters.

Herrenknecht adds: “A large number of tunnels currently in operation, e.g. in the German railway network, are older than 100 years and do not meet current requirements.” European safety regulations require a distance of 4m between rail tracks for train speeds of 230km/h.

Herrenknecht has developed special refurbishment equipment to enlarge such tunnels, consisting of three units, which are separated from the tracks by a protective cover. “This means that one-way train traffic, with a maximum speed of 60km/h, is possible during enlargement,” says the company. “The machine enlarges the tunnel diameter, increasing the possible distance between the two tracks and completely relines the tunnel walls with concrete segments.”
