Herrenknecht develops, manufactures and sells mechanised tunnelling systems with diameters ranging from 0.1m to 16m. The systems are individually adapted to particular projects and their specific geological and hydrological conditions.

For road tunnels (Ø >4.2m), the product portfolio includes hard rock machines and open-face shields, earth pressure balance shields and Mixshields.

The company also offers a range of services from 36 subsidiaries as well as the seven associated companies that form part of the Herrenknecht Group.

With a diameter of 15.43m, the two largest TBMs currently available are excavating up to 65m beneath the Yangtze River, in Shanghai, as part of the construction of a pair of 7.4km long road tunnels. The first Herrenknecht Mixshield (S-317) started in September 2006 and has now excavated more than 2200m. The second TBM followed three months later. These tunnels are to be opened to traffic in April 2010 when Shanghai hosts the World Expo.

Meanwhile, at the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland (2 x 57km), four Herrenknecht Gripper TBMs completed their drives between June and October 2006, having excavated more than 50km. The Herrenknecht S-210 and S-211 have now been refitted and adapted to a larger boring diameter – from 8.83m to 9.43m – so that they can begin work on the second tunnel section from Faido to Sedrun.
