Seal design and elastomer technology specialist Trelleborg Bakker claims to be the only company in the world supplying seals for both immersed tube and bored tunnels. It is one of the leading manufacturers of Gina gaskets and Omega seals and a prominent supplier of tunnel segment gaskets marketed under the Heinke trade mark.
The company adds that its water stops are considered as the standard solution to seal the dilatation joints, which also have to withstand sizeable joint movements, for example at immersed tunnels.
Last year, Trelleborg Bakker received the order to manufacture and supply seals for the first immersed tunnel in South Korea, the Busan-Geoje fixed link project.
Says the company: “The tunnel is special because of its length, depth and seismic conditions. Earlier tunnels we worked on were 25m in depth. This one is 50m, making it necessary for us to qualify our omega seals and injectable waterstops for the segment joints and immersion joints through new tests up to 9 bar to meet the specifications.”
Trelleborg Bakker also supplies Heinke tunnel segment gaskets. Recent projects are Madrid M30 with the largest diameter of 15m, Lower Lea Valley and Croydon in London, The Big Walnut Colombus Ohio and projects in Algeria and Perth – Australia.
