The 32.8km-long Koralm Tunnel between Graz and Klagenfurt will form the core of the future ‘Adriatic-Baltic-Axis’ international railway connection, from Venice, Italy to Warsaw, Poland. Alwag is currently supplying expertise and products for the exploratory tunnels, which will provide information about geological conditions along the alignment.

Says Alwag: “As the construction of the tunnel is affected by difficult and changing ground conditions, Alwag expertly supports the ongoing excavation with advanced reinforcement and support products such as the AT-Casing System or the recently developed AT-Power Set self-drilling vacuum tube spiles.”

“The spiles are perfectly suited both for reinforcement ahead of the tunnel face and for handling groundwater through coupled vacuum pumps, making progress easy even in difficult ground conditions,” the company adds.

Meanwhile, Alwag is also the exclusive supplier of reinforcement and support systems at the Lainzer Tunnel, a 6.5km-long railway tunnel currently under construction as part of the new Austrian high-speed railway system. Part of the tunnel has to be excavated in dangerous and unconsolidated rock formations, so Alwag’s AT-Drainage System was chosen to deal with areas flooded by groundwater. Lagging sheets and spiles are used for the reinforcement ahead of the tunnel face in order to guarantee maximum security and reliability.
