Barchip reinforcing fibre from Elasto-Plastic Concrete (Europe) is a leading structural synthetic fibre for civil underground construction and mining applications with over 500km of underground development in the last five years.

Recent tunnelling projects include Halsnoy Tunnel (4.1km), Atlantic Tunnel (5.3km) and the E18 motorway project (5.7km of twin bored tunnels). Barchip fibre is also designed for use in precast concrete such as tunnel segments, ready mix concrete and shotcrete reinforcement for repair work.

The Barchip range includes Shogun, Kyodo and Macro structural fibres, which are claimed to offer excellent cost benefits over steel fibre.

Says Elasto-Plastic Concrete: “Barchip’s unique engineered design incorporates an embossed texture and surface coating that enhances mixability. The embossing gives the fibre exactly the right amount of concrete/fibre bond so as to resist pullout but also prevent the fibre from snapping, ensuring equivalent post crack performance to steel fibre.” Claimed advantages include:

  • Non-rusting
  • No risk of puncture injury
  • Alleviates the problem of “short circuiting” electrical trailing cables
  • Improves shotcrete’s fire resistance
  • Less weight for handling when dosing fibres
