Meyco Equipment (MBT Group) launched the Mamba Spraymobile at Bauma last month. The compact unit has an overall height of 2.4m but offers impressive section coverage.

It is equipped with a BSA 502 concrete pump boasting a maximum output of 20m³/hour and a maximum pressure of 71 bar through 150mm diameter delivery cylinders. The Meyco manipulator boom includes a spraying reach of 2.7 – 9m with an arm reach of 1.5 – 7.8m and slewing angle of 270°. The steel additive tank has a capacity of 260 litres and the water tank a capacity of 230 litres.

The Mamba Spraymobile also offers three variations of hydrostatic four-wheel drive and optional extras include radio remote control, hopper vibrator and 1000W halogen working lights.

Master Builders Technologies has also addressed the issue of passive fire protection for underground structures, with the introduction of Meyco Fix Fireshield 1350, a cementitious based mortar that can be applied manually or be sprayed onto the substrate. A thin layer of Fix Fireshield can protect the underlying structural concrete at temperatures of up to 1350°C with minimal effects on the required structural envelope.

The mortar provides ease of repair after heat attack, good bond strength to most substrates; typically 1MPa, and a compressive strength of 10 to 30MPa.

Testing of Meyco Fix Fireshield 1350 at the TNO Centre for Fire Research, Delft, Netherlands, has shown excellent results with a layer thickness of 40-50mm producing very low interface temperatures without spalling.

New equipment from Normet of Finland includes the NorDoser 900 EDL accelerator dosing systemfor Spraymed plant and the Norjet 2001 spray nozzle. The NorDoser 900 EDL for both powder and liquid accelerators is compatible wiith all types including akali-free accelerators. Compatible plant includes the Spraymec 2000 WPC Boomin which combines efficient concrete spraying with full mechanised installation of heavy roof supports and mesh, thus reducing the overall support cycle time. The Boomin can be used in tunnel sections of up 250m² and so is applicable to three or four-lane highway tunnels.

The Norjet 2001 spray nozzle is said to be more durable to result in longer service life.

The new B50 shotcrete pump from Reed incorporates its proven S-valve and solid state Black Box for smooth, fast pump cycling. Rexroth Hydromatik variable displacement piston pumps eliminate the heat generation problem of hydraulic cycling which causes failure of conventional relays. The pump has a maximum concrete pressure of 94 bar and an output of 38m³/h.

The pump also features an open-loop hydraulic system, a 60kW liquid-cooled turbocharged Deutz BF4M1012 diesel engine, solid state pump cycle control, large capacity hydraulic and fuel tanks, and 914mm long stroke chromed concrete cylinders.

Reed is part of the $1.7bn J F Shea construction firm based in southern California.

Large volumes of wet, semi-wet and dry mixes can be processed by the new OCM-060 Universal-Dosa from Ocmer without conversion set, allowing selection of the water/cement ratio that fits best the specific geological conditions of a site. Many of the features of this machine are unique and are the result of Oscmer’s long job-site experience.

The OCM-060 allows, for the first time on a rotor machine, constant control of the dosage of the liquid quick setting additive: once the required percentage of accelerator is determined, it will be automatically maintained, independent of any variation on the concrete output.

The machine is also equipped with the Ocmer four point hydraulic clamping system that ensures a perfect fit of the rotor between the lubricated gaskets, so reducing wear, and automatic compensation of rotor plates and sealing gaskets wear.

Two other special hydraulic rams operate the feed hopper tip and extraction of the rotor allowing a single person to carry out routine maintenance quickly and safely.

To fully exploit the large concrete output of the machine, it can be combined with a nozzle manipulator. Ocmer has developed a spraying arm that can operate in very narrow sections, while reaching total vertical height of 8.6m. This allows an advancement of 2.5m in a tunnel of 10m diameter before repositioning. The arm is protected from possible damage by robust steel carters, increasing its durability.

Both the machine dosing unit and spraying arm are radio remote controlled and can be mounted easily on any kind of truck, together with the related accessories such as cable reel, additive tank and water tank, providing a universal shotcrete rig suitable for any kind of sprayed concrete application.

Prompt action was needed when sheet piles, used as temporary shoring in an 11m high excavated cut on a site in Vancouver, British Columbia, began to rotate about their soil anchors. This was the problem facing BelPacific Shoring and Foundations at its Denman and Alberni site where sheet piles already installed began to settle. The piles were found to be subject to hydrostatic pressure and grade was 4m below the piles.

Roger Abbot of BelPacific decided that the best action was to build shotcrete pilasters that would tie into the sheet piles and give load transfer. But the shotcrete would need to gain strength quicker than conventional accelerated shotcrete. After discussion of site conditions with local firm Ocean Concrete Products, sales manager Dennis Ceolin recommended Ocean’s Microsil Shotcrete-Fast Set which is designed to set quickly and achieve its one day compressive strength in only four hours. The dry, pre-blended shotcrete uses aggregates blended to meet gradation #2 of ACI 506.2 R-90, plus a modified, rapid setting, Portland Cement and Silica Fume. It is designed to achieve final set in 30 minutes, with a compressive strength of 15MPa at four hours and 50 MPa at 28 days, giving a minimum density of 2325 kg/m³.

BelPacific excavated to grade and drilled in 7.6m long, 73mm diameter piles. The re-bar was then installed to form the frame of the pilaster, and shotcreting started immediately. As Abbott said, “with the fast set up and quick strength gain of the shotcrete, load transfer from the sheet piles to the pilasters was accomplished very quickly”.

For shotcrete work in tunnels or to secure slopes, Putzmeister’s Wetkret WKM 133 has become a top model in the new Shotcrete Buffalo range. The large machine is equipped with a robust shotcrete arm with 13m vertical reach, and due to improved kinematics, the new boom can be unfolded in tunnels of only 4m width. Putzmeister has equipped the pedestal with a large turntable bearing to carry a working platform.

The 133 joins smaller brothers in the range, the WKM 103 and WKM 73, which are still selling in great numbers. Improvements to these include a reinforced drive train of the carrier, power brakes and improved drive hydraulics. Also available is the WKF 12.73 for mounting on a customer supplied truck chassis, with minimum weight rating of 16tonne and minimum engine performance 100kW.

The Wetkrets have high performance Putzmeister BST 1005 shotcrete pumps with output varying between 24 and 50 m³/h. Concrete pressure reaches up to 75 bar depending on model. All are equipped with a hydraulically-driven, proportional metering pump with the option of an electronically-controlled dosing system.

For smaller sites, Putzmeister offers the new trailer mounted shotcrete machine, the BSA 1002-E CE. It has an output of 13 m³/h with a maximum concrete pressure of 75bar, a standard 200 litre container for additives and a peristaltic dosing pump similar to those on the large shotcrete buffalos. A lightweight projector and a 50mm concrete line makes for easy handling.
