Raise drills for producing small-diameter bores in rock are available from Atlas Copco in the Robbins range. These are claimed to be the most technically advanced, robust and cost-effective equipment of this type on the market. The Robbins 34RH is designed for diameters of 600mm to 1500mm and the Robbins 44RH covers the range from 1000mm to 1800mm, and is suitable for raise lengths of over 300m, or over 600m in smaller diameters. The 44RH is a low-profile model, which is light in weight, yet offers higher torque (75kNm) and thrust (2000kN).
A range of pilot bits is available in three types covering hole diameters from 200mm to 380mm. These are Secoroc MH for extra long life in medium hardness or abrasive formations, the Secoroc H for rapid penetration in hard rock, and the Secoroc VH for very hard formations. Specialist Robbins cutters and reamers are supplied by Atlas Copco Secoroc through a worldwide network that also services Robbins products. Reamers are used with RCC Duro cutters. In smaller bores, the reamers are equipped with either two or four cutters. The reamer profile reduces the number of cutters needed to excavate the raise diameter, in turn requiring less torque and more drilling efficiency. In the cutters themselves, the new chisel insert with improved geometry gives a faster penetration rate.

To date, more than 850 Herrenknecht microtunnelling plants are in operation all over the world. With over 20 years of experience in this business, Herrenknecht’s systems are currently participating in numerous projects, using trenchless technology in diameters from 100mm to 4,200mm, such as water tunnels in Bangkok, sewer systems in Middle East and cable tunnels in Seoul.
Individually adapted process and service designs enable customers to achieve optimum tunnelling performance. An upskinned Herrenknecht AVN 1600 proved top performance in a pipejacking project in Bilbao, Spain with construction of up to 42.5m sewage tunnel per day in difficult limestone.
The range of Microtunneling technology covers the entire spectrum of application requirements. According to geological and hydrological ground conditions specifically adapted EPB, AVN or open shield machines guarantee a safe and efficient construction work underground. Continuous improvement and innovation in design and performance is Herrenknecht´s philosophy. For the recent introduction of a remote-controlled TBM 1200, Herrenknecht was awarded the Tunnelling Industry Safety Award, in May 2003 in London.
For realising HDD projects efficiently, economically and without harming the environment, Herrenknecht designs individually adapted HDD Maxi- and Mega-Rigs. With pull forces of 100t to 400t, the Herrenknecht Horizontal Drilling Systems are used in particular for trenchless gas and oil pipeline installations. By the end of this year, three Herrenknecht HDD-Trailer-Rigs will be used for this in China. More HDD-equipment is set for operation in Russia and the Middle East.

The benefits of trenchless technology were demonstrated recently when a large section of trunk sewer collapsed in Geelong, Australia. The depth and location of the 1350mm diameter reinforced concrete pipeline meant repairs would need to be made with minimal excavation. In addition, the main could not be out of service during repair and total by-pass pumping was not an option.
Rotaloc is a spirally wound PVC liner which is installed by a winding machine travelling inside the compromised pipeline. The pipe is not blocked during installation and while flows need to be managed, the pipeline does not need to be taken out of service.
Based on the assumption that the pipeline at Geelong had no remaining strength, Interflow proposed using a liner capable of taking all applied loads. The first challenge to face Interflow was the removal of debris. More than 40m3 of silt had washed in and in some places filled the pipeline to 40% of its diameter. Following the successful removal of the debris, installation of the liner began.
Services to Barwon Water customers were maintained throughout the project. All work was carried out after 10pm during periods of low flow. Each night, winding of the liner would cease while pump stations operated to relieve upstream storage capacity and until the flow subsided. The damaged sewer was successfully repaired with minimal inconvenience to the community.

Lovat mts (micro tunnelling systems), located in Valluhn, Germany, specialises in the development, manufacture and servicing of microtunnelling systems. The company also offers full support for Lovat TBMs in Europe as well as Lovat mts machines worldwide.
There are currently three product lines available, ranging from 150mm to 2,000mm i.d. The mts 400 is an efficient and simple auger tunnelling system for diameters of 150 to 400mm i.d. The mts 1000 has a diameter range of 250mm to 1,000mm i.d. and is designed for mechanical as well as hydraulic spoil removal, via auger or slurry. The mts 2000 is designed for demanding long distance and curved tunnelling of 250mm to 2,000mm i.d. The machines are of modular design and use many common components, simplifying diameter conversions.

Robbins small diameter double shields are full-function, man-entry double shield TBMs that can operate throughout a wide range of geology. These powerful, hydraulic drive machines are capable of cutting hard rock with disc cutters or, when fitted with a clay cutting head, can excavate weaker strata. The machine can advance without tunnel lining, or can be equipped to fully line the tunnel within the tail shield as the machine advances.
Robbins has delivered several small 1.6m-2.4m diameter TBMs. These machines have excavated a wide range of materials, from sedimentary rock with clay through hard granitic rock. The machines come complete with simple, tunnel proven, gantry-type backup systems. They are inexpensive to transport, quick to set up and easy to operate.
Robbins also offers a line of Small Boring Units (SBU). SBUs are used in conjunction with, and are usually powered by, industry standard auger-boring machines. SBUs allow auger-boring machines to excavate hard rock formations in the 600mm to 2000mm diameter range. The possibility to bore harder rock with their existing equipment brings tremendous business potential to owners of auger-boring machines.
SBUs consist of a rock-boring cutterhead, fitted with mini-disc cutters, mounted on a high capacity thrust bearing. The SBU can be steered, giving line and grade control. Primary applications have been on gravity sewer projects. For longer drives, the SBU is available with an independent cutterhead drive system which allows the full auger-boring machine torque to be used for auger rotation only. The past few years have seen growing and successful application of the method in the US, Australia and the Middle East.

Schwarzer are one of the market leaders in navigation systems for pipe jacking and microtunnneling world-wide. Automatic surveying and data acquisition systems are based on modules, patented electronic hose water-levels and sophisticated navigation technology deriving from military applications. The combined systems align data acquisition and pipe jacking control, adjustable to the requirements and conditions of specialised tunnel engineering tasks. Apart from navigation, the SDV (System for Data Acquisition and Tunneling Control) allows implementation of automatic bentonite control and additional modules for data acquisition. The data transferred with CAN-Bus technologies offer immediate transparency and provide continuous quality assurance.
A user friendly interface provides visual data displays. Independent from the location, the jacking process is operated by remote control via radio or modem technology. Additional control features are available as modules and can be added as needed offering high flexibility.

The government of Singapore is currently replacing its existing sewage water system with a Deep Tunnel Sewerage System. Wirth was awarded the order for a type RVS 800 S microtunnelling machine, 2160mm diameter that will, at first, be employed for a 2.5km long section of the smaller lines. Wirth Soltau claims it can fulfil most requirements and cope with long drives. The RVS 800 S is equipped with four hydraulic motors and 250kW drive power; the Wirth Soltau Control System (WSS) is designed for drives up to 600m.
The all new Wirth Soltau Steering System (WSS) makes the equipment flexible and versatile. Without modifying or additional cabling, a gyrocompass or an electronic water level for surveying of curves can be simply plugged in. One of the big advantages is that controls and display remain unaffected. The machine driver only needs one additional software module but does not need to adapt to new controls. The WSS will not be used to the full this time because the longest drive in this part of the project will be about 350m.
