Construction on the 22km long Vorotan-Arpa tunnel, in Armenia, is nearing completion – 21 years after it started. Excavation began in 1982, but was suspended in Armenia’s first years’ of independence through lack of funds. Interest in the tunnel resumed in 1998, when the government released approximately US$2.5M for the continuation of construction in 2002. The tunnel is expected to go into service later this year. The tunnel will transfer water from the Vorotan river in south Armenia, to Lake Sevan, Armenia’s largest fresh water reservoir.
