The Municipality of Abu Dhabi City has started wide-ranging refurbishment works in the tunnel of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Street, also known as Airport Tunnel, as part of its efforts to improve the facilities to ensure the safety of road users, maintain the metropolis outlook and keep pace with the urbanization drive witnessed by the city of Abu Dhabi.

Maintenance works underway include maintaining & replacing defective lights, re-painting ground markings along with the yellow line on both roadsides, treating the extendable surface partitions, treating the dividing partitions & cracks with special grouting, refurbishing the tunnel body, repairing the concrete slabs, and re-painting and cleaning the tunnel walls.

These maintenance works, which started in early August 2010 and are set to continue over a month to come, aim to raise the efficiency of the tunnel and maintain it in a fully operational condition considering its importance as a main traffic corridor and a strategic crossing point, ensuring smooth flow of traffic outbound to both the Corniche and the suburbs as well as the exit motorways of Abu Dhabi Island. The Tunnel comprises three driving lanes in each direction in addition to two emergency lanes and has a capacity to accommodate 7200 vehicles per hour.
