Construction has commenced on a 360 m-long tunnel and concrete road infrastructure as part of Phase 4 of Armenia’s North-South Road Corridor, covering the segment from Agarak to Kajaran.

The project is progressing on schedule, with the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development (EFSD) updated on its progress during a recent mission to Armenia. The EFSD has allocated $150m specifically for this section of the corridor.

Phase 4 of Armenia’s North-South Road Corridor encompasses the construction of a 32km road, two tunnels (measuring 360m and 520m), and 17 bridges, including one with a span exceeding 720m.

An international bidding process was launched in 2018 to prepare the detailed design for the Kajaran-Agarak section of the North-South Road Corridor. The results of the bidding were finalised in February 2019, and the design work was completed in 2021.

A tender was announced for procuring construction works on a 21km road section from Agarak to Vardanidzor and the construction of an 11km road from Vardanidzor to the tunnel exit.

The contract was awarded to a joint venture between Abad Rahan Pars International Group and Tunnel Sadd Ariana. The contract for completing the construction was signed in October 2023.

In total, the EFSD has invested $350m into the North-South Road Corridor project in Armenia.

This corridor traverses six of Armenia’s 11 regions, including Yerevan, and serves over 1.5 million people each year.

Once complete, the new route will be 14km shorter, enabling an average vehicle speed of 80kmph, and reducing travel time between Kajaran and Agarak by approximately 40 minutes.
