The Armenian government’s energy ministry is planning to build an 18km long water diversion tunnel as part of a US$56M 79MW hydro-electric plant on the Araks river which borders Iran. The 7.6m diameter tunnel will have a capacity of 100m³/s of water per second. Armenia is currently negotiating with Iran over water rights. French and Canadian financiers have already expressed interest in the project which should take about five years to build.
