Aprototype of the Robogat automated fire fighting system that aims to tackle tunnel blazes by running from portals on a ceiling-hung monorail and tapping mains water has been tested by the developer in Pomigliano d’Arco, Italy.

The town, near Naples, is where Robogat S.r.l., the owner and developer of the patented and grant-funded safety system, is based. Its prototype sent real-time data from the fire site to a control room outside the tunnel.

Robogat was developed from a concept by local fire engineer Domenico Piatti. It was conceived in the 1990s and was developed to the prototype stage as funds were gained. The company aims for Robogat to be used in industrial facilities as well as tunnels.
